How to contribute to translations

To translate our solutions we use Weblate. Before we start explaining how to use Weblate lets answer a few basic questions that you might have.

What is Weblate?

Weblate is a libre web-based translation tool with tight version control integration. It provides two user interfaces, propagation of translations across components, quality checks and automatic linking to source files. You can get more details about the software here

Why do we use Weblate in /e/OS

We use Weblate to automate the process of localization of all default Application text.

What languages are supported on /e/OS

We focus on the support of the following languages:

• English

• Italian

• French

• German

• Spanish

In addition to these 5 languages, some community members contribute to the translation in other languages, for instance:

• Polish

• Dutch

• Russian

• Turkish

• Bulgarian

Are these the only languages that will be supported?

Can I help translate /e/OS on Weblate?

• Yes, anyone can help with the translations
• All you need is a /e/Gitlab ID

Ok I have my /e/Gitlab ID, how do I proceed ?

• Log in to https://i18n.e.foundation/ with your /e/Gitlab ID - This is how Weblate welcome screen would look like ; the Sign in button is at the top right corner:

• Once you have successfully logged in you should see a screen similar to this:

• Then create an issue in GitLab to request the rights to translate in your language.

How to use Weblate and translate

• This is the Weblate Dashboard
• On the menu » Projects » Browse all Projects
• This should bring you to this screen

• Select the project you want to contribute to:
  • /e/ if you want to translate for /e/OS
  • ecloud if you want to translate for Murena Workspace
  • /e/ support center if you want to translate the documentation
• This will open a screen similar to the following one:

• Select the Component you want to work on, e.g. BlissLauncher or AccountManager
• This will open a screen which will show you the different languages in which we translate

• Select the language in which you want to translate. This will open a screen looking like this one:

• In this screen preferably click on Unstranslated strings and Unfinished strings. If there aren’t any you can select Strings waiting for review. You can also use the Search tab to look for a specific string you want to edit.
• The next screen is where you will be working
• In the box on top labelled ‘Translation’ you can see words in English in one text box and below you will see another text box where you need to type the translation in the language you are working on:

• Once you have translated the string, click Save and continue to move to the next string. Please keep the default Waiting for review option selected.
• The next string will show up for you to translate

Why should I keep the default Waiting for review option selected?

Several contributors can be translating for the same language and you will notice that sometimes it’s difficult to make abstraction of the original wording in English to make the translation sound natural in your language. So while first translating a string, it’s better to mark it as “waiting for review” so another contributor in your language can verify it. You can also verify it yourself a few days later when you’ll be able to have a fresh look at it.

When reviewing a translation you can tick the Approved option and then click on Save and continue if said translation looks good to you.
